About this campaign
The Tharmam Centre was established on 13 August 2022. It is a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering Deaf individuals and promoting inclusive communication within society. The Centre works to advance the recognition, learning, and use of Tamil Sign Language, while advocating for equal opportunities in education, employment, and community participation for Deaf individuals.
Through a fundraising initiative involving a 21-kilometre marathon in Bonn, Germany, the organisers aim to support the Centre in offering internship opportunities for Tamil Sign Language interpreters in the Kilinochchi District. This initiative seeks to improve access to essential services for Deaf individuals.
At present, many rely on interpreter services from Jaffna, Vavuniya, and Trincomalee districts, which limits timely and equitable access. Through the provision of three interpreter internships, the Centre will be able to establish local interpreting services within the Kilinochchi District. This initiative will ensure more adequate and immediate access for Deaf individuals and support their full and independent participation in society.
